The Lakewood Speed Skating Club has been in existence for more than 80 years. We are a group of
skaters ranging from age 6 to older than 66 who have a love for going fast on ice. The club is open to
skaters of all ages and abilities. You can be a first-time skater or a skater with ice-experience, maybe
hockey or figure skating, but looking for something a little different, a little more exciting. Speed skating
can provide that difference and excitement.
The club is coached by former U.S. National Team members and former U.S. Olympic Team members.
They are Level 1 and Level 2 U.S. Speed Skating certified coaches. Their focus is on teaching the sport of
short track speed skating, proper technique and safety on the ice. Former members of the club include
15 U.S. National Team members, 6 U.S World Team members and 3 U.S. Olympic Team members.
Safety includes the proper equipment – helmet (bike helmets are acceptable), gloves, long pants and
sleeves (no jeans or baggy pants), knee pads and neck guard (speed skating specific).
The club practices twice weekly, Wednesday and Sunday evenings, during the season which runs from
September – March. Since the club is open to all ages, it can be a fun, whole-family activity. New
skaters are welcome at any time. Come to Winterhurst and watch a practice or jump right into your first
practice. You may attend two sessions free of charge before joining the club. Hockey skates can be
used initially. A limited number of club speed skates are available.
There are local, regional and national racing events available to club members, which are optional.
